These are the master (mp3) files. Sorry, no lossless. My recorder doesn't have enough memory to record lossless. Several songs to a track (I stopped it once in a while because this recorder has a tendency to die and cause you to lose the currently-recording track; so this way if it died, at least I'd have the previously saved tracks. Thankfully, it didn't die this night). A few seconds of space missing between each track, but no music or stage banter missed. Sorry, no setlist, but some good tunes. "Red/Green" is a Big Boys cover. Openers were Bangs and Corin Tucker Band (I didn't tape either of them due to space issues. Yeah, I need to put a few bucks towards a new memory card).
I haven't listened to it all yet, but seems like a decent B+/A- recording. Hope a few of you guys like it.

This is my first time using Minus to upload anything, so hopefully it works ok. |

YOU ARE A GOD!! You are a GOD among mortals!! You performed the lost sacred art of bootlegging, then the honorable sacrifice of time to share it up!
Thanks man...I will hook you up with a DVD when it's done. Audio is already available on Dime for the Troubadour show. If you don't have an account PM me and I will figure out a way to share it up for you. Thanks again you made my day...I been bitching all day that no damned tapes and only one youtube showed up for Portland...nothing but 5 clips from SF, and only 1 vid from Phoenix. So, out of all those shows you get like 5 version of Plenty for All, but not complete gig. YOU DID IT>>>YOUDAMAN! Thanks! -Tashi. |

You Betcha!! The version Hi-Lites on this think makes me to vomit it's so good...it's insanely good...Froberg detunes his voice like a guitar and weirds out the song in ways not many people can get away with...not many take chances on letting things go wild...playing it safe and all.
Anyhow it's not a A recording, but a B+ in my book (I love live bootlegs and so it might be rougher than you like). Anyhow, if you are like me you just wanted to go to every show, you gotta have it. With a little EQ and a couple a beers it's gonna sound A-. I'll put it up on my site in a day or so.
The Hot Snakes Vera 2005 DVD is going bye bye due to lack of interest so I'll put it up in it's place...If you want that you better grab it now: http://mysite.verizon.net/res6kq04/id6.html
I will do a touch-up EQ and make proper trackmarks for it too...shouldn't take long and this was a great show! Band was in a good mood, probably partied hard the night before having a day off in the tour...they kind of loosened up the songs this night....yeah only a single YouTube and this guy's tape to show for it...no pix. Guess everybody smoked to much Oregon weed and were too blown away to remember to take a photo or video, but this guy went to some trouble and documented the evening! Yep, I'll share it up in a day or so.
Here's the video version of Hi-Lites to tide you over until I up it again...not as clear audio as the MP3 version I'm gonna share up, but you can kinda hear what I'm talking about.

Rad! I was at the Portland show (which was one of the best times I've ever seen them play past that first tour), so having a souvenir of that will be awesome. I'll grab those DVD's when I'm home this evening, too.
Thanks, Tashi! You rule! |

| And I will say that Doug Fir show was the LEAST phone-present show I've seen in years. I think people were pretty caught in the moment of all of it, and it really seemed like people were more concerned with paying attention to the show than documenting it. It was pretty awesome to not be surrounded by the glow of LED screens and just feel the focus of the crowd! |

You know...I can appreciate that too. 50 cell phones in the air looks ridiculous. It's like watching somebody pushing a button at a crosswalk 100 times in an effort to speed it up. They quality is probably shit, they don't get the whole song, nobody gets the whole show, and they rarely share them up. So it silly looking, distracting, and pointless in the end. Worse is watching people texting during a gig...P'a-leazzzze! How retarded is that?
It's a quandry for me. I guess I'm a hypocrite...which is very UN-PUNK of me. I'm the asshole who actually asks the "normal" person texting during the movie to turn the phone off for an hour so the "uptight" people like me can watch the movie without having a conniption fit. I'm turning into the grumpy old man in the theater...strike 2...very un-punk.
I think there's a time and place for documentation...And, with the Hot Snakes, it's -always-, but with some discretion if possible. I actually got to watch the Troubadour show without worrying about filming since my "zoom cam" wouldn't focus in the low light from the balcony. It was actually a blessing, since I got to watch the entire show without worrying about the camera...the balcony cam in the DVD was "mounted" to the railing out of mind and totally out of sight. I was drooling like I'd had a lobotomy over the amazing show instead of annoying everyone around me and missing the subtle moments.
On the other hand, I couldn't see JACK in the back of the Casbah shows, and I paid $120 bux for one ticket, so I'm glad I taped, and I'm sure I didn't disturb too many people in the very back of the joint. Many people who couldn't afford a Stub-Hub ticket or who weren't able to buy one in the 5 hours it took for them to sell out, might want to see that show. Not to mention, all the people NOT in Europe, NY, or West Coast. ( The DVD is gonna be good because my mono-pod got me the camera angles and one "mounted" near the ceiling.)
So, The Casbah's HAD to be taped...like a great homecoming of a band that helped put that place on the map as far as I'm concerned...though many would say it's the other way arround.
On the second Casbah, the crowd thinned for the encores and I walked right up directly in front of Rick and felt a bit "invasive" to be that close. Ironicly, it's the "close shots" you want to see mostly when watching a band video, not the far shot with expressionless images on a tiny stage. I'm in some other guys YouTube...I'm the obnoxious "light" in front of HIS obnoxious light!! When I saw that I was thinking, shit, I'm glad it wasn't the other way arround, since I'm making a proper DVD of the show and he's upping a song or two at best. Still, I suck because I'm the guy that makes his video look like shit. In the old days you had to be sneaky, and the cameras had better low light and sound recording, so I was always in the back out of the way and discreet. Now with cell phones making it a semi - "legit" thing to do, I don't know what to say about it. I like you point though. The clubs should only let ME tape right?
I was talking some smack, but actually I DO respect the intimacy of how you described the Portland show. I think the Arizona show was probably similar...very little filming and NO audio even.
Thanks for reminding me that just watching and digging the band, without wrecking it for others is most important. I always try to respect the space and the view of everyone...I actually quit video and audio taping for about 10 years...only started back up due to Scratch Acid's reunion and Hot Snakes reuniting. Ok...TMI, but, good point you made. -Tashi
PS...We have NO complete Hot Snakes video from 2002...only clips exist. It's a shame, because if the Michigan Fest COMPLETE DVD exists, it has the only video of Paid in Cigarettes, Ben Gurrion, and possibly Paperwork that we will ever see, AND it was Pro-Shot! Even Reis doesn't have a copy of it. The guy who says he has it won't trade it though or pass on info where he got it...but that's another topic.
---John, I mean "oh Your HIGH-ness, SW@MI", if you're reading this, My wishlist: Officially released Hot Snakes Double DVD with Michigan Fest 2002 Complete, and Hi-Lites of last 5 2005 shows....you get a nice mix of Jason and Mario that way. (We can see if the guy will make the SW@MI a copy, I bet he would.) -Tashi. |

Wasn't trying to make any sort of dig at you filming, so I hope you didn't take it as that! Just saying, there are a lot of folks (I've been guilty of it a time or two) that are filming terrible quality stuff that isn't going anywhere for anyone's benefit at every single show we go to these days, so it's nice when that isn't happening and those of us who are old farts who went to shows pre-cell phone can enjoy it for what it is...a moment in time (where phones aren't being wagged in front of us while we're losing our respective minds).
I know folks who know the folks who made that Michigan Fest DVD. I should ask around and see if anyone can drum that set up. I'm sure what they have of the majority of the set is unedited...it was filmed on umpteen cameras around the venue, but I'm sure there is at least one good source video of the set with good sound. Then again, that whole weekend was full of bands, so it's hard to imagine that they taped the entirety of every band's set? Who knows. Things were a bit different 10 years ago (hell, that makes me feel old). |

No issue and no offense, but you bring up a good point. Sometimes I feel silly like my "documentation obsession" gets more attention than it should...good points about the CRAZE of the cell phone camera at live shows...not against it, but not exactly for it either...your points just made me think on it...a bit too much maybe.
Yeah, if you could get a hold of the Michigan Fest friends of friends, there is SUPPOSEDLY, a DVD already dubbed...the guy won't trade. I ask him every 2 years or so and he say's stop pestering me like I'm spamming when I touch base every 720 days. I offered to send blanks and pre-paid postage mailer...he says he's waaaaay too busy to burn a dub of his disk....and to stop bugging. Anyhow, it would be a great show to see...that was part of a 3 day stint using borrowed equipment there, at Fireside Bowl in Chicago, and The Empty Bottle...Pre-Suicide Invoice release perhaps too, with songs they cut for the main 2002 tour. It always seems a shame that the snakes cast out half and album from the live set each time anyway (though Rick says they just like playing some more and those become "the set", so I get that), but early on each tour you can catch a few more before they get tossed like I taped Paperwork at "The Scene" in San Diego (audio only)....never played again. Hatchet Job was played a bit in early 2004 shows. Luau was stunning during the 2005 shows even as a cover. You can never really get enough of Salton City...and I would love to see Paid in Cigarettes even though Rick thinks his lyrics are dumb and doesn't want to play it...shit he smokes...makes sense he doesn't want to play that. "Unlisted" was played then too, dropped from the reunion setlist. Apartment O was played on their 3rd show, (in Philly) then never again. 2000 shows included Lurkers Lurkers.
Seriously, I would be so stoked if you could even get me a contact person to email. I'm a good trader and if they need raw footage mixed and audio matched up, I'm pretty good at it now after the Trouby and a few projects that preceded it. Most people lack the time and interest...I have both at the moment, but my first kid coming in 2 months...that'll change things...I will miss the Obits in Long Beach in Aug and Hot Snakes in SF and Portland while I discover the joys of fatherhood. I'll probably be a ghost after that for awhile.
So, yeah, lemme know...I know everybody's really busy, but it would shut me up with the begging for more videos of these guys. That's the holy grail of Hot Snakes shows for me. Later, -T |
